A few Mondays ago, on October 19th, Ace Lover and I decided to attend the legendary A&R Dante Ross’ 50th bday party at Bowery Electric via Mobile Mondays.

As soon as we arrived at the lower Manhattan venue, there were a bunch of people chillin’ outside including my home gyrrl I haven’t seen in over 10+ years, DJ Elle (& her boyfriend), who’s now doing it up big-time down in Miami.

We then entered the building at around 1 something in the morning close to 2am and none other than the Chocolate Boy Wonder, Pete Rock (who along with CL Smooth, got signed by Dante back in the days) was spinning some rare 45’s (vinyl phonograph records) on the 1’s & 2’s (Technics 1200 turntables). Oh yeah, just before that I gave the homie Termanology (a ThundaGround Alumni) dap as we stepped downstairs. MM’s founder Operator Emz, along with the birthday homie Dante hosted on the mic until all members of a group he signed to Elektra Records back in 1989 named Brand Nubian hit the stage to perform classics like “Slow Down”, “One For All” “360” & “Punk Jump Up.” “Step To The Rare” was such a powerful opener for the night, which also reminds us that not only did Ross sign these Gods of hip hop back in that Golden Era, his production team called the SD50’s (Stimulated Dummies, along with his partner John Gamble) actually produced that very opening cut/banger by Grand Puba Maxwell, Sadat X, Lord Jamar, plus Alamo was good to go. As Just Blaze kept it so funky holding down them turntable decks, their set was smooth like Calgone, cuz they took us away!!!

Afterwards, the Conglomerate Busta Rhymes got on the microphone to wish Dante a happy birthday and give us a run down on why Ross is so important to not only Busta’s family & career, but hip-hop & music as a whole. Others DJ’s who got busy for the night included: Dan The Automator, Natasha Diggs, Edan & J-Zone! HBD DANTE!
