Shabaam Saadiq did it again as his Marvial Ent’s IT’S ALIVE hip hop showcase brought out West Coast Cali icon Ras Kass & Cleveland Ohio’s veteran mc, Copywrite (of MHz & The Weathermen fame), for their Writer’s Block Tour stop here in NYC.
If you’re a true hip hop fan who regularly attend NYC events, and was aware of this past Monday’s lineup of shows, depending which era you’re from, you would have had a very hard time selecting just who to see perform and where to go. There was Organized Konfusion’s “STRESS: Extinction Agenda” reunion show in Brooklyn at SRB and 9th Wonder’s Jamla Is The Squad album release show at S.O.B.’s.
For me it wasn’t as difficult, considering I didn’t leave my real life responsibilities until about 10pm and 2 out of the 3 events started at 9:30 (Organized Konfusion’s reunion show started early at 7:30pm). Not to mention, Shabaam and I are like brothers, so of course he had me on the list. While at the other events, I had no clue of my status making it there on time or getting in without a problem. I would have paid whatever to see Pharoah Monch & Prince Poetry, but my VERY hard earned loot (aka gwop, aka mulaa, aka skrilla, aka fetty) would have been wasted if I showed up late to the venue. Pro-Acting is better than Re-Acting, especially when it comes to preventing yourself from getting PISSED OFF!!!!!!!
As soon as I walked in I quickly saluted the homie straight outta Corona, Queens, Nutso aka Nutragious, so we immediately snap some photos alongside the Crown Heights super rhyme spitta, Ruste Juxx, all while Vast Air of Cannibal Ox & Double AB were on stage rocking. Nutso must have got on before I arrived so following Cann Ox, Ruste Juxx went on and did his thing. Next, it was the Queensbridge O.G. from the group Screwball (R.I.P. Kamakazee KL aka Kenny Lou & Screwball), Black Poet, who brought out his “little homie” Tragedy Khadafi. Copywrite continued the showcase performing his underground favorites proceeding to Ras Kass, who ended off the show lovely with some of his classics like “Soul On Ice”, “Miami Life” and even a “Nature of the Threat” snippet (them few bars I appreciated).
Also shouts to Wais P and Ransom & Statik Selektah also who were in the building.
