In our society when often times we strive to find good-natured,
educational reading materials for our children, it is always a blessing
when a well-written book, filled with inspiration from which children
can learn, is presented. The first book in the “Heroes Start as
Kids” series, First Day, by John Cooper, follows Dewey, a nine-
year-old sports fanatic, through his first day of fourth grade. The
book is written from Dewey’s perspective and is warm and truthful.
The author tells Dewey’s story without the use of mythological
or imaginative creatures and shares nothing more than a young
boy’s heart. Dewey’s happiest and most feared times are shared in
accordance with when they occur and children should easily be able
to relate to Dewey’s hopes and dreams.
The author’s inclusion of pictures throughout the book further adds to
the wonder and amazement in this children’s book.
If First Day is any indication as to what is still to come in the series,
the author has begun a literary vision that should be passed
down from generation to generation, leaving children to wait with
anxiousness and enthusiasm for the next books in the series.

Dewey and his friends are back in In the Groove – the second book
in John Cooper’s “Heroes Start as Kids” series. In this book, Dewey’s
friends help him overcome his depression from losing the ‘big game,’
and Dewey has new neighbors. Clyde, also known as Big C, is a
musician and bigger than most of the kids his age. His dad is a pilot
in the Air Force. Before long, Clyde is known as Big Bang. We see
the emotions of the book’s characters clearly when Dewey’s class is
given the assignment to locate a news article to share with the class
and Dewey is forced to face sadness.
In The Groove continues the tale of Dewey, his friends, and their
adventures. Author Cooper continues to relay Dewey’s story from the
standpoint of this nine-year-old boy, complementing the tale with the
use of pictures. Readers are drawn right into the tale from the book’s
first page as we read about Dewey and his basketball game. The
reader’s interest is kept throughout the book.
As In the Groove ends, the author leaves the reader with some
semblance of uncertainty. This will have the reader yearning for what
is to come in the series’ third installment and like the readers, I can
hardly wait to see what comes next.
A delightful book, filled with life’s lessons and realism, In the Groove
would be an excellent addition to any child or school’s library.

The Comeback – John Cooper’s third book in the “Heroes Start as
Kids” series, begins with the main character, Dewey Does, facing a
dilemma. When what he has always believed to be true about his
family’s life is thrown into a whirlwind, Dewey turns to the greatest
support base that he has known – his friends.
After questioning whether to enlist the assistance of his friends in
finding the truth about his life, Dewey confides his innermost feelings
to his friends and learns that they are more than willing to help him.
But will the support be enough to solve the mystery?
The Comeback shares with the reader many lessons to which
anyone, regardless of their age, can relate. The greatest message of
the book, in my opinion, is when the author chooses to teach about
placing faith and trust in our friends, proving that our truest friends will
remain faithful through any forms of adversity.
This book, along with the first two books in the series, First Day and
In the Groove are inspiring to read and encourage children to follow
their dreams. All three books should be considered as valuable
additions to any school or personal library.
